I Feel As Though Mac Apps Cost Too Much

Sep 11, 2016  I feel the same, but I would still have to buy a Mac, because I cannot stand the competition THAT MUCH. I've been using Apple since 1980 (though I have used Windows as well, since the mid-90s), and it has been an ever-improving ride until Jobs died. Whether you plan to use your Mac for school, work, entertainment or everyday use, the right software can make your life easier and more productive. From business and office software to music, photo and video editing to finance and tax software, you can create, edit, organize and discover new ways to get things done.

To enable the Mac App Store, Snow Leopard users will need to update to Mac OS X 10.6.6, either by using the Mac’s built-in Software Update or via a download from Apple’s Website. It’s too much downtime between workouts. And when I do that, it actually adds too much one because even though I skipped 10-15 minutes, the “whole workout” is considered to be 21-29 minutes (not just the additional 10 I actually worked out in the second and third sets).

The iMac Channel

Daniel Knight - 2001.04.18

Charles W. Moore started a real controversy over on Applelinksearlier this week by writing MacsStill Cost Too Much. As a leading proponent of value computing,I'm inclined to agree.

It's not that Macs are a bad value - if I thought that, I'd berunning different hardware today. The real problem is the cost of entry. If you want a current model computer,Apple's least costly option is the400 MHz iMac. It's a nice machine and one of the leastexpensive Macs Apple has ever produced, but it costs $899 here inthe States.

Compare

Much

Let's compare that to a couple entry level systems from wellknown Wintel brands as featured in the latest PC Magazine:

  • Compaq Deskpro EX Microtower, 667 MHz Celeron, 64 MB RAM, 10 GBhard drive, 15' monitor with built-in speakers, Intel 3D AGPgraphics, 48x CD-ROM, Intel audio, 10/100 ethernet, but no modem.$689. ($779 with modem.)
  • Dell Dimension L series, 933 MHz Pentium III, 64 MB RAM, 20 GBhard drive, 15' monitor, Intel 3D AGP graphics, 48x CD-ROM,SoundBlaster, no ethernet, 56k modem, and speakers. $799.

The good news is the death of really cheap PCs. A year or twoback, everyone was convinced $500 systems were the way to go. (Ofcourse, that was $500 plus a monitor.)

Even if you believe the old Apple mantra that 'the G3 processoris up to twice as fast as the Pentium II as the same clock speed,'it's hard to sell a 400 MHz computer against a 667 MHz one, letalone 933 MHz at a lower price. Besides, both Celeron and PentiumIII outperform Pentium II, while the 400 MHz iMac is using the sameG3 processor Apple first used back in 1997.

For the average home user, you need CD-ROM, at least a 15'display, no less than 64 MB of memory, a 10 GB hard drive, stereosound, accelerated 3D graphics, and a modem. Both the Compaq andthe Dell offer that for $100-120 less than the iMac.

Sure, some will object that we have to configure the PCs tomatch the Macs. That kind of comparison has its place, but nothere. Budget buyers tend to buy a system, add a printer, and addvery little else until it comes time to replace the computer in 3-5years.

Shot in the Foot Again

Mac Apps Reviews

Until it was discontinued on February 22, 2001, Apple had theperfect alternative to these Wintel machines: a 350 MHz iMac with a $799 price tag. Itmight have paled in the MHz comparison, but it did give Apple aniMac at the same popular price point as several Windows systems. It's too bad the newer 400 MHz model costs $100 more.

Though

The $899 iMac offers FireWire and AirPort, but these areprobably not that important to the computer buyer on a budget. These folks are looking at dollars and cents; they don't expectgigahertz processors, megafast peripheral busses, or wirelessnetworking. They probably don't have a second computer to networkwith.

Feature Rich for the Rich

Can you play ipad apps on mac. Stephen Van Esch makes a good point in The Computer for the Best of Us when hesuggests Apple can't compete on price alone. Although I think Applecould be more competitive in the cost department (they have thehighest margin in the personal computer industry), they are sellinga different product.

Some people buy store brand ice cream; others fork out for Edy'sor Ben & Jerry's. Some people want the cheapest Korean car onthe market; others want a Saturn, Honda, or BMW. Some people justwant a boombox; others insist on Sony.

There will always be a market for economy computers - and dozensof large and small companies will beat each other up for a largerpiece of the budget market. A lot of them will disappear, whilebrands that offer good value and good quality will survive thebrand shakeout.

Apple has never gone for the low cost market. Commodore did.Atari did. Radio Shack did. Osborne and Kaypro did. Storerooms, garages, and landfills are littered with the rusting corpses offailed PC brands.

As for Macs, while they do have a bit of a premium price, andwhile Apple could trim a feature here and a dollar there, maybethey don't cost too much. In a world where hundreds of PC brandshave fallen by the wayside, there's value in a company thatsurvives by making a profit selling better computers.
