Bottom Line
The Sony Network Walkman NW-E505 offers good sound quality in a very attractive package. The battery life can't be beat, but the required SonicStage software and lack of WMA support hold it back a bit.
The Sony NW-E505 looks like a very fancy cigarette lighter, but it's actually a 512MB MP3 player with an integrated FM tuner. Although the device doesn't pack extras such as voice-recording ability, and Sony's SonicStage software still leaves a lot to be desired, it has one of the most attractive hardware designs we've seen. The sound quality is very good and the user interface is interesting, if not particularly intuitive. The most impressive feature, however, is the unbelievable battery life.
Our test unit is metallic pink, but the player is also available in blue. The shiny front of the casing is translucent and reveals a blue OLED (organic electroluminescent display) screen underneath, which is visible only when it's active. The screen is bright enough indoors, but readability drops significantly outdoors in daylight. The analog controls are very clearly labeled and well positioned, except for a single button located on the back of the player that is extremely difficult to press because it's flush with the player's body. The offending button controls the repeat and sound modes. The volume buttons are located just where you'd find the gas button on a Bic lighter—a nice touch.

To skip tracks and navigate menus, you turn a knob on one end of the player. You push the knob all the way in to lock the controls, and pull it out halfway and turn it to skip tracks. To jump to the next folder, you pull it out all the way and turn it. The FM tuner, which uses the headphone cord as an antenna, is of average strength. Powerful stations come in loud and clear, but weaker ones tend to get lost easily. In MP3 playback mode (the player also supports ATRAC3 and ATRAC3plus formats), we like the overall sound quality with the decent included earbuds, but the bass is a bit weak on the default settings. Instead of equalizer presets, the NW-E505 offers two customizable sound settings based on simple bass and treble tone controls, each of which gives you three steps of adjustment in either direction. Despite the tone controls' effectiveness at adjusting the overall balance, engaging them lowers the overall output, so we often found ourselves listening at top volume. Luckily, the sound doesn't distort significantly even with the volume up all the way. We did measure more total harmonic distortion at the standard 1-kHz measurement point than we usually see on MP3 players, but it's still just within the margins of what we consider acceptable. The player's frequency response is mostly flat down throughout the mids and highs, though we detected some very minor colorations in the lower and middle midrange. A fairly quick roll-off begins in the upper bass, which shows weakness in the lowest octave.
One thing Sony has really excelled at is battery life, and the E505 is no exception. The company claims a 50-hour battery life for it, and on our battery rundown test (which uses a real-world mix of MP3 files encoded at from 128 Kbps to 320 Kbps), we measured slightly more than 53 hours. To get this extended life, we had to select Super under the Power Save menu, which turns the display off after a few seconds. But even with Power Save off, which leaves the LCD on, we got nearly 24 hours—still very impressive. We also like that the battery charges to full capacity in less than 2 hours.
The list price of $129.95 may seem like a lot for a 512MB player, but we feel the design and battery life justify it. The clunky SonicStage software and the E505's incompatibility with the increasingly popular WMA format are limiting, but once you get the software set up and running and get used to its quirks, it shouldn't be much of an issue.
